Beyond Fest, the Los Angeles genre festival that takes place at the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood in the fall, has just announced the theme of their 2018 festival -- and boy, it's a doozy.
"Cronenberg With Cronenberg: A Retrospective of New Flesh" is a career-spanning retrospective with director David Cronenberg in person, along with a bevy of cast members and other special guests. One of the main originators of "body horror" -- horror that tests and distorts the limits of the human body -- Cronenberg's career has spanned four decades and over 20 feature films.
The festival opens on Sept. 29 with an all-day marathon of Cronenberg's early films: Shivers, Rabid, The Brood, and Scanners. Cronenberg will be on hand that night for the 30th-anniversary screening of Dead Ringers and take part in a post-screening Q&A with composer Howard Shore. On the 30th, a double feature of "giant bugs" -- The Fly and Naked Lunch -- will be followed by a Q&A with Cronenberg, Shore, and The Fly star Geena Davis. Oct. 1 will feature the "distorted world of virtual reality" with screenings of Videodrome and Existenz. Cronenberg will be joined by Shore and stars of the films Debbie Harry and Jennifer Jason Leigh for a Q&A.
A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Spider, and Crash will also be screened off-site, at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. All films will be shown on 35mm film.
In addition, artist Alan Hynes has created an exclusive print for the festival, and Mondo has created a series of Cronenberg-related collectibles that will be available for purchase exclusively at the festival.
Tickets go on sale Sept. 1. More films will be announced at a later date. For more info, visit BeyondFest.com.
