The final six episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures, completed before star Elisabeth Sladen's death from cancer in April, are set to begin airing Oct. 3. But the new trailer for the show's final season isn't about Sarah Jane's curtain call.
You might expect some kind of goodbye theme for these episodes, even though they were completed quite some time before Sladen's death. It wouldn't be out of the question for the show's creative team to package them as a kind of final farewell to one of the longest-serving characters in the Doctor Who—and by extension BBC—universe. But the way it's done here, as the continued story of an uncommon woman who never stops having adventures, turns out to be better.
We've known for a while that the final six episodes are three two-part serials, the final pair featuring Sarah Jane's son Luke (Tommy Knight). Long-serving Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures writers Phil Ford and Gareth Roberts get to close out the series with their stories. It's all very fitting for the end.
But the trailer gives no indication that we're about to see the final episodes of the series, or that Sarah Jane herself is in some way gone. The trailer is about the adventures, about all the fun sci-fi madness that will befall Sarah and her little extended family as the show comes to an untimely end. There will no doubt be some sort of tearful farewell all over again when the final episode airs, but with these stories—as far as this trailer is concerned, anyway—we can think of Sarah Jane as living on, still on an adventure somewhere in our heads.
What do you think? Does this trailer promise six more good episodes before we have to say goodbye?
