Sure, Nick Fury has been around for decades, but it's the modern incarnation that’s arguably become the most iconic version.

The modern-day Nick Fury was introduced in Marvel Comics' Ultimates line and made the jump to live-action in the MCU thanks to Samuel L. Jackson. The rest is history. Jackson has become a mainstay of Marvel's movie universe and was literally the architect of bringing the Avengers together in the first place. He's a super spy who is always six steps ahead and in the Ultimate universe was also a true father figure for characters like young Peter Parker.

Folks like Captain America and Iron Man might get most of the publicity, but it's almost always Nick Fury behind the scenes pulling the strings. His methods might get a bit murky, but he always has the world's best interests on his mind.

Check out our tribute to Fury (and follow along all month as we celebrate 28 different heroes for Black History Month).
