We’re honoring some of our favorite sci-fi heroes for Black History Month (28 heroes over 28 days), and today we turn the spotlight on Star Trek's Lt. Uhura.

Going back to Star Trek: The Original Series, Nichelle Nichols' Lt. Uhura was one of the first black female characters in a position of authority (and was a legit sex symbol, to boot). She changed things for sci-fi fans and served as a role model for an entire generation of young women to show them that in the future, they can aspire to be anything. She brought hope and promise for a new tomorrow.

Looking to the new trilogy of Star Trek films, Zoe Saldana did an excellent job of keeping the legacy alive. She's presented a strong, capable version of Uhura that you'd have to think Nichols must be proud to see pick up the mantle.
