Black Mirror heads to the neon-drenched 1980's in first look at Netflix's new season

The sci-fi anthology Black Mirror has become a bona fide cult hit, and now we have the first look at Netflix’s new run of episodes.

The series is essentially a modern-day take on Twilight Zone, shining a lens on how technology is changing the world and how we interact with it. All filtered through a slightly terrifying lens. The show is fantastic, and after it found an audience on Netflix, the streaming service stepped in to help kickstart production on a third season.

Now we have our first look at what they’ve been putting together. On episode, dubbed “San Junipero,” is set in the neon-drenched world of the 1980s. It features stars Mackenzie Davis (an alum of the excellent 1980s set tech drama Halt & Catch Fire) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights), who is taking full advantage of the decade’s fashions.

The more modern pics are from the episode “Nosedive,” which will star A-list actors Bryce Dallas Howard, Alice Eve and James Norton. Interestingly, “Nosedive” was written by Rashida Jones and Mike Schur (Parks and Recreation) and directed by Joe Wright (Atonement). It’s pitched as a “social satire about identity in the social-media age.” They also call it a “cheerful pastel nightmare,” in case you’re wondering about the costuming choices.

The new episodes are slated to hit Netflix on Oct. 21.
