Apple press events are now pop culture moments all their own. From the stylish trailers to surprise bands, and the usual "one more thing," these events are as much in the lexicon as iPhone and iMac.
But now pop culture and Apple are crossing paths in a surprising way -- via Black Mirror. The new "Animojis" feature on the iPhone X utilizes facial recognition to sync up with emojis that let people "speak through them." Yes, it is probably as creepy as it sounds. It's also something Black Mirror did in the "The Waldo Moment" episode, where a blue cartoon bear won a political election.
The official Black Mirror twitter account edited the video from Apple's announcement to include their Waldo character, and as you can see, it got quite the response. While this feature probably wasn't inspired by Black Mirror, it is one heck of a coincidence. Regardless, showrunner Charlie Brooker hopes Apple isn't looking to his series for ideas.
"If Apple really is using Black Mirror as inspiration for future products, I think we're all in trouble when season four launches," he joked to THR. If Apple asks us to product test their new Whack-a-Mole game, we're staying away.
