Black Panther is finally here — but not before it broke a final Fandango presell record last night for good measure. With just a few hours left until it was available for general audiences, Marvel’s revolutionary hero cracked Fandango’s top-five list for its all-time highest presellers, bested only by three Star Wars films .
Black Panther now ranks fourth, behind The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rogue One — all also Disney films.
The final film of the five is the first Hunger Games movie.
This, of course, isn’t the first record Black Panther has broken on its way to an estimated $180 million opening weekend (which in itself would be a record). It became the fastest preselling movie released in the year’s first quarter, the best preselling Marvel movie, then the best preselling superhero movie overall.
Fandango’s managing editor Erik Davis had this to say while announcing the milestone: “Along with its groundbreaking ensemble cast, Marvel's record-shattering film has immense depth, heart, and a soulfulness that sets it apart from all the superhero movies that have come before it."
With rave reviews and a solid opening night behind it, Black Panther looks to carry its word-of-mouth into the weekend with its head held high. There’s no telling what records will stand by the time it’s done.
