It's fitting that the king of the most technologically advanced nation on Earth should appear in Top Ten lists around the globe, and as of today, T'Challa, aka Black Panther, aka the Black Panther film, is a king of yet another thing: namely, single day box office grosses. The 75.8 million dollars Black Panther brought in on it's first opening day (which includes $25.2 million from advance screenings Thursday night, and $50.6 million from Friday alone) has raised Black Panther to the number 8 spot for single day grosses in film ever, surpassing Captain America: Civil War by .3 million, coming in just ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, and forever taking the Twilight saga down a notch.
Black Panther, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Chadwick Boseman as our, and Wakanda's hero, is making history in other ways as well, coming in third behind just Avengers and Avengers 2 for opening days for a superhero movie, and expected to reach a gross of $190-$210 million by the end of the holiday weekend.
Additionally, as Scott Mendelson at Forbes points out, it's massive top ten opening is the biggest single day gross ever for a film not directed by a white male, as well as the largest opening ever for a solo superhero movie. That's some strong vibranium.
