Genre fare rules the costume world. Black Panther, Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman and A Wrinkle in Time are among the notable fantasy films that have sewn up nominations for the 21st annual Costume Designers Guild Awards while Star Trek: Discovery, Outlander and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events fit the bill on the TV side, per Variety.
The CDGA honors the best costume design on the big screen and small and are chosen by the costume designers union. And sci-fi and fantasy has played no small role in allowing these talented artists to express their visions, so much so that there's a category dedicated to the best in both.
And no doubt it'll be fierce competition with Aquaman and its mythical Poseidon-tinged marine outfits facing off against Marvel's African-inspired cat suits for Black Panther, the slick, modernist superhero apparel of Tony Stark and the gang in Avengers: Infinity War, the extravagant pop designs of Ava Duvernay's A Wrinkle in Time and lavish ballroom dresses of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
While Mary Poppins Returns' magical 20th century wardrobe, captured vividly by that Depression-era red hat the titular umbrella-wielding nanny wears, will compete against such flicks as Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, BlacKkKlansman, and Mary Queen of Scots in the period piece category.
In terms of the tube, nominated along with Star Trek: Discovery in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Television category were The Handmaid's Tale, American Horror Story: Apocalypse, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Westworld. While Ronald D. Moore's Starz' time-travel fantasy drama Outlander scored an Execellence in Period Television nod going up against Amazon's alterna-reality hit, The Man in the High Castle and TNT's 19th century serial killer thriller drama The Alienist.
Winners of this year's Costume Guild Awards will be unveiled at a ceremony set for Feb. 19th. For the full list of nominees, click here.
