Last weekend, Black Panther shot back up to No. 5 at the box office thanks to the arrival of Avengers: Infinity War. There’s a very good chance both films will remain in their positions for this weekend even though Black Panther’s digital release is coming early next week. As part of the advance publicity, Marvel Studios has released a new Black Panther deleted scene that casts T’Challa’s journey in a new light and foreshadows some of the choices he made over the course of the film.
Via ComicBook.com, the lost moment comes from the early part of the movie after T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) has returned to Wakanda and taken his crown. It’s a quiet scene between the new king and his loyal advisor, Zuri (Forest Whitaker), that touches upon Zuri's past as one of the undercover War Dogs from the beginning of the film. But the primary topic of their conversation is T’Challa’s late father, T’Chaka, as they share memories of his time as Black Panther.
While this scene didn’t make it into Ryan Coogler’s final cut of the film, it does lay the groundwork for some of T’Challa’s biggest decisions. In the clip, T’Challa can’t seem to fully reconcile T’Chaka’s willingness to engage with the nations of the world after teaching his son to distrust outsiders. By the time the story reached its conclusion, Killmonger had challenged T’Challa’s worldview and inadvertently changed his perspective. Because of that, T’Challa is going to be a very different king than his father was.
Black Panther’s digital release date is May 8, with the Blu-Ray and DVD to follow on May 15.
