They say lightning never strikes the same place, but when it comes to the Pierce family, all weather-based rules go out the window. The CW has released the first look at Nafessa Williams' Thunder in the upcoming Black Lightning series. Williams plays Anissa Pierce, the daughter of Jefferson Pierce (the show's eponymous character, played by Cress Williams), who has inherited super abilities from her father.
In the comics, Anissa makes a deal with her parents that she won't go into a life of crimefighting until after she graduates from college. She is able to change her density at will, make her body bulletproof, and produce devastating shockwaves.
Here she is in the full badass costume that evokes the aura of an angry yellowjacket. This is one hero you clearly don't want to mess with, and there's no doubt she packs quite the sting.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Salim Akil said that Jefferson isn't too pleased with his daughter having super powers. “It’s hard for any parent to see their children grow out of the nest,” she said. “In a way, he’ll be a little fearful, because he understands what having powers is and what it means. The same way when parents see their children go off into the world without them, they’re a little fearful because they understand what the world has in store for them. But you can’t stop that. You have to let them grow.”
Based on this, it seems that Black Lightning's second and younger daughter, Jennifer (China Anne McClain), will also become the superhero known as Lightning, whose abilities are more in line with those of her father. Lightning also became a member of the Justice League in the comics.
Black Lightning premieres on Jan. 16.
