Bloody action is back with a vengeance in new trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire

The latest trailer for 300 sequel Rise of an Empire has arrived, and it brings with it a ton of new (extremely brutal) footage and details.

Though the first trailer we saw last year was almost drowning in CGI, the latest footage is the best yet — and actually has us a little more hopeful about the followup. Instead of Gerard Butler’s Leonidas, we have Strike Back star Sullivan Stapleton stepping into the lead role of Themistocles.

The new footage also does a better job of connecting the dots to the first film, as Lena Headey’s Queen Gorgo pops up to help ease the transition. Eva Green’s Artemisia is effectively scary, while the return of Rodrigo Santoro’s Xerxes as just as deliciously over-the-top as ever. The battles look bigger, and the action looks just as crazy as you'd expect. So, good start.

But, the action still feels a tad green-screen-y, though it has an epic scale that could (hopefully) make it a worthy successor to the bat-crap-crazy-awesomeness of the 2006 original. Check out the footage below and let us know what you think:
