You obviously needed something upbeat this weekend, because you bypassed both Surrogates and Pandorum in favor of a second helping of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Variety reported. The animated comedy came in at the top of the box office with $24.6 million, for a 10-day take of $60 million.
Surrogates, starring Bruce Willis, came in a disappointing second with $15 million, performing well under expectations. With an $80 million budget and a major promotional push, the launch was lackluster.
Fame, a remake of the 1980 hit, followed in third domestically with $10 million, Matt Damon's The Informant took fourth place with $6.9 million, and I Can Do Bad All by Myself followed with $4.8 million.
That left the outer-space horror flick Pandorum in a disappointing sixth place with only $4.4 million.
Love Happens followed with $4.3 million, while Jennifer's Body dropped 49% in its second week to $3.5 million. 9 came in—appropriately enough—in ninth place with $2.8 million, while Inglourious Basterds took the final spot in the top 10 with $2.7 million.
The micro-budgeted Paranormal Activity scared up a solid $80,000 from latenight screenings Friday and Saturday in a dozen college cities; nearly all 24 shows sold out.
Paramount asked Paranormal fans to go to the film's website to demand additional playdates, and the studio said Sunday that it had been "bombarded" with more than 200,000 requests. It's likely to offer midnight showings next weekend in new markets but hasn't yet nailed down specific locales.
