Brent Spiner: You'll likely see a rebooted Star Trek: TNG someday

Love it or hate it, J.J. Abrams successfully rebooted Star Trek: TOS with his action-packed 2009 entry into the Trek-verse by infusing some much-needed fresh, green Vulcan blood into the tired franchise.

So which series—Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, or Enterprise—do you think should be next? Brent Spiner knows exactly which one.

The next Trek series to get the ''royal treatment',' of course, would be Star Trek: The Next Generation!

In a lengthy, interesting interview with Trek Movie, Brent Spiner—the man who played the much-loved Lt. Cmdr. Data on the sci-fi series (which turns 25 this year)—discussed the much-touted issue (among Trek fans) of also rebooting Next Gen for the big screen. (A few months ago, Marina Sirtis, who played Betazoid empath and counselor Deanna Troi on TNG, mentioned that it was the only way to go for the series.)

Here's how Spiner envisions the future of the beloved franchise.

I don't know any twenty-something actors [laughs]. I do think it is likely they will reboot Next Generation some day. I don't see Star Trek ever ending. I think it would better if they went further into the future, past where we did or the original series or Voyager or Deep Space or any of them, and continues the saga. I am not that keen on going backwards because then it becomes history instead of the future.

We tend to agree with Mr. Spiner here: The Star Trek franchise (at least on TV) should look ahead to the future and not the past if it's ever going to make its long-awaited and past-overdue return into our homes.

Now, if they DO reboot The Next Generation in the near future, let's hope they'll leave the lens flares where they belong. In the past.

What do you guys think? Would you LOVE to see TNG being rebooted for the big screen? Who would you like to see play Capt. Picard, Cmdr. Riker, Data, Geordi and company? And do you also agree that the next Star Trek series should take place after the events of DS9 and Voyager?
