As Marvel prepares to launch its Defenders miniseries on Netflix, the publisher is also putting together a new-look version of the team for a comic run. So, what does creator Brian Michael Bendis have to say about the project?

Dynamic Forces chatted up Bendis about the new comic series, which will feature the same cast of heroes as the TV version (Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Daredevil). Of course, the comic versions of those characters are in very different places than their TV counterparts. But still, same roster. Since Bendis created Jessica Jones, and already wrote most of these characters during his acclaimed New Avengers run, it’s hard to imagine anyone more qualified to pull this one off.

Bendis said the project has been something he wanted to do for a long time, and the success of the Netflix shows was the perfect catalyst to get it off the ground. He plans on digging deep into the street level characters of the Marvel Universe, so look for a lot of cameos and crossovers. Here’s an excerpt from his comments:

“It absolutely 100 percent comes out of my love of these characters and the work I had already started doing with them in their solo titles or in New Avengers. The success of the Defenders TV shows allows this project to move forward with gusto, but this is something that I was eager to do since my last issue of New Avengers. In fact, it is on the record, because my last page of New Avengers was actually a pitch for this book.

Well, all of the relationships are in flux right now but the four of them will realize that the streets of the Marvel Universe actually need them to be united and to be very public in defending and protecting the streets. That doesn't mean everything's okay with everyone because it's not. These are very stressful times. Jessica just went through the biggest challenge of their marriage and we still don't know what the fallout will be. And I'm happy to report that every single street level character or what you would call close to a street level character will be appearing in this book.  Some as guest stars, some as rotating members of the squad, some as anti-heroes, some as real antagonists.”

Bendis also teased that Doctor Strange will be appearing as soon as “the dust clears,” which makes sense, considering Strange was a key player in the last version of the Defenders. He played coy in regards to how long the series will run, but seemed to indicate there is a longterm plan to make it an ongoing series if readers pick it up.

The first issue of the new Defenders hits shelves in June.
