Doctor Who is entering a whole new era with Jodie Whittaker's 13th Doctor. Fans are thrilled with what they saw in the premiere and eagerly looking forward to what's next. As Whittaker's Doctor breaks the glass ceiling of time and space on the iconic show, she's also making strides in another perhaps unexpected, but welcome area by inspiring the first Doctor Who limited edition Barbie doll.
Mattel and the BBC collaborated on the doll and announced the news at New York Comic Con Sunday. The Barbie has the 13th Doctor’s signature outfit as well as her new sonic screwdriver. To say she looks brilliant might just be an understatement. You can get a look at the doll close up with her screwdriver and lace-up boots on the official Doctor Who website.
This is just the latest of Mattel’s genre releases in the past year. The company also made dolls for The X-Files characters Agents Scully and Mulder, dolls of Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which from A Wrinkle in Time, and a doll for Lara Croft inspired by the new Tomb Raider film. It’s nice to see Mattel releasing more dolls inspired by strong women in genre. Who knows what franchise could be next?
While we will be not-so-patiently waiting for Mattel to announce a TARDIS accessory to go with the 13th Doctor doll, Whovians can at least start preordering the Barbie on Monday. It will be available on multiple websites including ForbiddenPlanet.com, Barbie.com, and HotTopic.com
