The Evil Dead revival series Ash vs. Evil Dead proved to be one of the big surprises of last season, and it sounds like we’ll be learning a whole lot more about the man behind the boomstick when the show returns.
Producer Rob Tapert said the new season is “far bigger and more ambitious” than Season 1, with a larger cast and broader canvas. Pacing was one of the strangest things about the first season (each episode clocks in at a brief half hour), but they finally started to figure it out by the end of the year. Rolling into Season 2, it sounds like they’ll be cramming even more into these installments.
Bruce Campbell himself chatted with IGN about the new season, and promised we’ll get to learn more of Ash’s backstory, which had only been hinted at in the films. The first season helped drop some breadcrumbs, but Campbell said Season 2 will really peel the layers on Ash:
"Season 2 for me is all about Ash going home and seeing the personal side of him. No one knew anything about Ash, where he lived, what he was like. Ash was like a teacher: you'd see him at school, but if you saw him out of school you'd feel weird. Whenever I saw a teacher out of school, I felt was weird; I never liked it. But now we're going home. We're following the teacher home from school."
Co-star Lucy Lawless also touched on the role her character will play, and promised she'll have even more to do in the new season.
Ash vs. Evil Dead returns to Starz on September 23.
