Bruce Campbell says there'll be (gasp!) no Ash in Evil Dead remake

Can you imagine an Evil Dead remake without the iconic character of Ash? No? Well, apparently the filmmakers can.

According to Slashfilm, Bruce Campbell, who played the buffoonish Ash Williams in all three of director Sam Raimi's Evil Dead epics, tweeted that there is "no Ash character currently" in the remake when asked who would take on his signature role.

Campbell added in a second tweet, "Last statement: ED remake is a re-telling. All bets are off & all involved love the new approach."

So what will the new Evil Dead movie contain if Ash is not involved? There's no word at this point. Short film director Fede Alvarez is making his feature debut with the movie, with a script rewritten by Diablo Cody (Jennifer's Body), all under the watchful eye of original creator Sam Raimi, so we're hoping that the movie is faithful to the spirit of the original films even if it radically departs from them.

But still ... no Ash? Is that a good thing for the movie, or bad?
