A Battlestar Galactica alum has joined the cast of 12 Monkeys in a recurring but pivotal role on the upcoming third season of Syfy’s time-traveling series.
According to Entertainment Weekly, James Callis, who played the deliciously dastardly villain Gaius Baltar on Ron D. Moore’s acclaimed sci-fi series, will play a key role in the 12 Monkeys mythology moving forward. Executive producer Terry Matalas explained that Callis will play “a highly anticipated and pivotal new character to our series’ mythology.”
But wait, there’s more! The character is described as a “rebellious and enigmatic time-traveler raised throughout history by the Army of the 12 Monkeys, one whose conflicted personal and emotional path will change everything for James Cole (Aaron Stanford) and Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull).” Let’s take a second to let that sink in. A highly anticipated and pivotal character? A time traveler raised by the Army of the 12 Monkeys and one who has a “conflicted and emotional path” that will affect our two main heroes (and lovers)?
Now that sounds really important. So important that the good folks of EW are wondering if this mysterious character might be the Witness — who was revealed during the jaw-dropping Season 2 finale to be Cole and Cassie’s child — and methinks I’m leaning in that direction as well. Why else would the powers-that-be nab the always awesome James Callis for the role of a pivotal character? Everything that's been said above is checking all the boxes for the enigmatic Witness.
One thing's for sure: if Callis does indeed play the role of the Witness (and this is just speculation at this point) I can see no one better suited for the job. Just look at his Gaius Baltar — a character we loved to hate and hate to love on BSG. Here’s a synopsis for upcoming season:
The third season finds Cole and Railly embarking on a desperate search across time to find the man responsible for the apocalypse, a time traveler who calls himself the Witness. Killing the Witness will mean saving the world, but the journey will come at tremendous personal stakes for the two and will call into question new alliances, old bonds, and the virtue of the mission itself.
What do you think about James Callis splintering aboard the third season of Syfy’s 12 Monkeys? Do you believe he could indeed be playing the Witness?
