Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the seminal '90s TV series that taught a generation of girls to be strong and independent, turns 20 years old today. There are countless Buffy heroes, villains and stories to love, but today I want to celebrate one of the lesser characters. A man we all know and love: the Cheese Man.
The Cheese Man appears in only a single episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 4's finale, "Restless." Even in that one episode, his screen time is limited to only a few minutes, but they are minutes which resonate with Buffy fans for their sheer brilliance and absurdity.
In his brief time in our lives, the Cheese Man taught us so many important lessons.
He taught us to always make space for the important things in your life …
… that sometimes the things we love will not protect us …
… and, of course, to not let things overpower your own sense of identity.
The Cheese Man is the thing in our lives that doesn't make sense, but he is also the thing that connects us. Like the cheese-food slices he peddles, he will live forever in our memories. And like their strange, wiggly consistency and not-quite-right taste, his presence stays with you long after he is gone.
Thank you, Cheese Man. Our dreams would be so boring without you.
