One of the most highly anticipated superhero movies of the year is -- without a doubt -- director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman. The Amazonian princess' first cinematic solo outing will take place during World War I, when Diana (Gal Gadot) will leave the shores of Paradise Island to help in the Great War with the belief that she can make a difference.
The movie will also introduce Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope and Lucy Davis as Etta Candy. Along for the ride are Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya and Lisa Loven Kongsli.
Even though Wonder Woman is set to open in June, the Warner Bros. powers-that-be are still keeping the identity of the movie's main bad guy under wraps ... although there have been plenty of rumors and hints that Ares would be the one pulling the villainous strings. That's also the character everyone believes Danny Huston to be playing.
Well, it now looks that the God of War's role in Wonder Woman has been confirmed, and we have some possible juicy details to share ...
In a recent article in French magazine Studio Ciné Live (via Les Étoiles Héroiques who also provided the English translation), Chris Pine explained how Steve Trevor ends up on Themyscira: "I play a pilot who works for the Allies and spies on the Germans without their knowledge. My character steals a notebook filled with scientific formulas in an Ottoman base, he steals a plane but is shot down in the open sea."
Here's what the excerpts plucked from the article had to say about said scientific formulas and Ares' role in the film:
Behind these scientific formulas, there is a deadly gas that could well annihilate humanity. It turns out that it might interest Ares, the god of war. He is jealous of humanity, which is a creation of his father, the deceased Zeus (the Amazons and Zeus rebelled against Ares and Zeus died at the hand of his son) …
Why did Zeus create the Amazons? Because shaping man in his image made his son Ares, incidentally a god of war, mad with jealousy. To restore harmony between them, Zeus created the Amazons, which Ares reduced to slavery. The Amazons revolt with the help of Zeus, who will die at the hand of his son, having had time to find Themyscira, their haven of peace where they will grow Diana. (…) Diana Prince becomes Wonder Woman by helping Steve Trevor and a squad of proud arms-in-law in search of one who wants to wipe humanity off the map with deadly gas.
Wonder Woman will open in movie theaters on June 2.
