Escape rooms are all the rage these days (the concept was recently parodied on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), so it makes sense for Hollywood to capitalize on the fad and turn a fun team building event into a horror-filled thriller.
That's exactly what Escape Room from Columbia Pictures is after, but after watching the first trailer for the upcoming movie, you won't think that it's just a lazy cash grab attempting to make money off a hot cultural phenomenon.
Directed by horror alum Adam Robitel (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, Insidious: The Last Key), the movie — originally titled The Maze — looks like an interesting mix of David Fincher's The Game, James Wan's Saw, and Drew Goddard's The Cabin in the Woods (with some Inception-y visuals thrown in for good measure). In fact, we'd go so far as to say that Escape Room seems like smart subversion of the Saw franchise, whose endless installments have flooded the market over the last decade.
Watch the first trailer below:
Starring the likes of Deborah Ann Wall (Daredevil) and Tyler Labin (Tucker & Dale vs Evil), the film finds a group of six strangers who are invited to take part in an escape room challenge that soon turns into a deadly exercise in survival. It also becomes apparent that the mysterious folks behind the whole affair know exactly who they all are. With that in mind, we can almost certainly expect a few twists and turns as the plot progresses.
Check out the "puzzling" poster below, which has gotta be an homage to the one made for The Game in 1997. For comparison, we're including both below...
Logan Miller (Guardians of the Galaxy), Taylor Russell (Lost in Space), Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick), and Nik Dodani (Atypical) are also part of the principal cast.
Escape Room attempts to find its way out in theaters January 4, 2019.
