Can we expect some classic creature cameos in the Ghostbusters revival?

Arguments over its female-featuring cast aside, it's been very interesting to see writer/director Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot take shape, particularly because it seems to be a movie packed with callbacks to the original film. The team's uniforms are very similar, they'll drive their own version of the Ecto-1, and they'll be toting Proton Packs that very closely resemble those with which the original cast battled the supernatural. The film will clearly be riding a line between reboot and homage, and we're still finding out new ways in which it will do it.

We already know to expect plenty of cameos, including appearances by Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver, but what about the non-human elements of the Ghostbusters mythos? Will we see familiar spooks in the flick?

According to Den of Geek, various licensing companies have already seen some footage from the film in preparation for tie-in products that will be launched, and based on reporting from a recent issue of License! Global magazine, we can expect all of these elements to show up in one way or another.

“Ecto-1, Slimer, the Stay Puft Marshmallow man, proton packs and PKE meters...”

Now, we already knew about two of those thanks to Feig himself, but the inclusion of Slimer and the Stay Puft man are particularly interesting. The Den of Geek report doesn't spoil how Slimer will come back but speculates that the Stay Puft references could be quite peripheral, with the iconic character appearing only on, say, products at a supermarket or in TV commercials. Either way, it would be an amusing callback.

So, while we don't yet know the context, it seems we can expect even more original Ghostbusters easter eggs when the new film lands in July 2016.
