With 21 movies as a precursor and an army of characters to pull from, Avengers: Endgame is chockfull of callbacks, comic references, and Easter eggs. Some allude to comics in the sprawling Marvel canon. Some are nods to past MCU moments, like the Avengers' shawarma group hang. But did you spot the Easter egg that paid tribute to one of the MCU's most beloved directors, Taika Waititi?
Below are minor spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.
The New Zealand writer/director made his mark in the MCU with Thor: Ragnarok, where he not only gave the mighty god a fresh and funny new vibe, but also co-starred as one of Thor's new mates! Waititi lent his voice — complete with Kiwi accent! — to Korg, a friendly rock-beast imprisoned on Sakaar. After surviving the Grandmaster's brutal gladiator battles, Hela's hellacious attack on Asgard, and Thanos's universe-devasting snap, Korg resurfaces in Avengers: Endgame chilling in the quaint village of New Asgard. He and his not-dead bug-buddy Miek are Thor's closest friends, sharing in kegs of beer, stacks of pizza, and marathon online gaming sessions!
You couldn't miss this brawny rock bro on Thor's sofa. But did you catch what he was wearing? Gone is his leather armor and loincloth. And in their place is a distinctive two-piece buttondown shirt and shorts combo, emblazoned with a vibrant pineapple print. Sound familiar? It oughta!
Not only did film fans around the world love him for helming such daring and daffy movies as Eagle vs Shark, What We Do in the Shadows, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, but now fashion fans had a new celebrity crush.
What Waititi look would you like to see Korg sport next?
