Did you know that Candyman was almost Dormammu?
You guys know Tony Todd. The genre vet has starred in A LOT of cult classics and iconic series over the years, including (and not limited to): Candyman, Hercules: The Legendary Journey, Xena: Warrior Princess, Final Destination, The Crow, several Star Trek series, Stargate SG-1, Angel, The Man From Earth, Chuck, Dead of Summer and, most recently, as the voice of Zoom on The Flash.
Dude even played another DC Comics villain by voicing Darkseid in a few of the animated LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes films.
And he almost played a Marvel villain. In a recent and lengthy interview with the good folks of Comic Book Resources, Tony Todd revealed that before the studio settled on Benedict Cumberbatch for Dormammu (the Sherlock actor had previously voiced and mo-capped Smaug in the Hobbit trilogy), the genre vet spent time in the recording booth portraying the powerful and evil primordial being ruling the Dark Dimension.
"I have to tell you about one recent disappointment. I almost did Doctor Strange. I went in to do a session to play Dormammu. Benedict [Cumberbatch] had already recorded it but the producers wanted another voice just as an alternative. We did a six-hour session and then two weeks before the movie came out they let me know that they went back to the original choice. I say this just to point out to everybody that you've got to roll and sway with all these punches and waves that come at you. Did I cry? No. I understood. I was disappointed at the value that I lost — people going, 'Dude, are you Dormammu?' [Laughs] But there'll be another Dormammu."
There you have it. I don't know about you, but I'd really love to hear Tony Todd's voice recording as Dormammu; unfortunately, it looks like his work won't be included in the bonus material on the Doctor Strange Blu-ray. Bummer.
