"S.H.I.E.L.D. takes the world as it is, not as we'd like it to be." That's Nick Fury's (Samuel L. Jackson) bold declaration to Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The idealistic First Avenger is having a hard time reconciling his person beliefs with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s mantra. Because of his doubts in the agency, the sequel plays more like a political thriller. The "suspicious" angle is explored in a behind-the-scenes featurette that appears on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-ray.

The Winter Soldier introduces us to several new characters, including Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). Pierce is the former head of SH.I.E.L.D., who actually recruited Nick Fury. Redford says his character has "a lot of dimension to him" and there's "a certain amount of mystery that emerges." Considering that he groomed Fury into the superspy he is today, Pierce is definitely one to watch.

Meanwhile, Wilson may be Rogers' saving grace. His Falcon becomes Captain America's partner in heroism. "Sometimes the person you need to trust is a stranger, and that's where Mackie comes in," Evans explains. But don't worry, Scarlett Johansson's still a part of the team. Both Black Widow and Cap will watch as everything they fought for goes up in flames. Their trauma only feeds into the film's conspiracy theory theme.
