The best Marvel villains know how to make a mark, and Ben Mendelsohn (Ready Player One, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) has plenty of experience doing just that. Mendelsohn's latest foray into villainy comes in the form of a Skrull named Talos in Marvel's upcoming Captain Marvel. The Skrulls, who are shape-shifting aliens, will be a major obstacle for Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. But Mendelsohn's character is even more villainous, posing as a human inside S.H.I.E.L.D. to help the Skrulls invade.
In an interview with EW, Mendelsohn talked why he loves playing a villain so much.
“It leaves an imprint on people when you do it right. I think that’s nice," said Mendelsohn. "I think it’s nice to provide the counterweight that people have got to get over, you know? In order to get ahead in the hero’s journey. It’s a job of honor. It’s not for everyone. [Laughs] But I do take it as an honor. I do.”
Mendelsohn clearly loves skrullin' it as a villain, which bodes well for Captain Marvel. Over the course of the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, arguably the best Marvel films are the ones with the best villains. Think Loki in Avengers, Killmonger in Black Panther, or Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. So Mendelsohn and his Skrulls have plenty of evildoers to look up to.
Captain Marvel skrulls into theaters March 8, 2019.
