The last time we saw the silver Stormtrooper officer known as Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), she was about to be shoved into a Starkiller Base trash compactor by Finn and Han Solo near the end of The Force Awakens. It seemed like an anticlimactic thing to do with the character, touted as a badass from the moment she was introduced in the marketing materials for the film, but it wasn't the end of Phasma. You don't grab someone as awesome as Christie, put her in a costume that perfect, then ditch her after one movie. So, Captain Phasma is back for this year's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The question is: How?

Now that question will be answered, not by a film but by a Marvel Comics series. Just as they did with The Force Awakens, Disney is rolling out a line of "Journey To..." stories to bridge the gap between the films, and one of them is Captain Phasma. This four-part miniseries from writer Kelly Thompson (Hawkeye) and artist Marco Checchetto (Star Wars: Shattered Empire) will revisit the chrome-plated villainess and finally show us all how she got off Starkiller Base and managed to survive for at least one more movie.

“The Star Wars films, with so many fantastic characters, obviously can't be a ‘Phasma story,’ and it's especially cool that Phasma is getting explored in depth in both her forthcoming novel and comic book,” Thompson said. “The most exciting thing to me about our mini-series is that we were given the awesome responsibility of bridging a gap between Force Awakens and Last Jedi – of answering the question of what happened to Phasma after she went into that trash chute. Anytime you get to write official Star Wars is pretty incredible, but getting to decide what that link is, for a super intriguing character in some of the most epic movies of all time, is next level!"

The first look at the series arrived Wednesday, and while it doesn't provide too many details just yet, it does indeed hint at an explanation for Phasma's escape. From what I can tell it involves a ricocheting blaster bolt, an explosion, and a whole lot of chaos.
