Are you feeling like you want to celebrate Earth Day this year, but have no geeky way to do it? Worry not, we have the solution. The animation-based streaming service Boomerang is bringing back the classic cartoon Captain Planet and the Planeteers, and they are doing in just in time for our planet's holiday on April 22.
Boomerang will launch all 26 episodes of the cartoon's original first season on April 19, and they are also taking the extra step of making them absolutely free to watch until April 22. The season features celebrity voice cameos from Whoopi Goldberg, Meg Ryan, Martin Sheen, Jeff Goldblum, and Sting. Boomerang's app can be accessed in a number of different ways, including Android, IOS, Apple TV, Roku, and more.
Originally running from 1990 to 1996, the series had a total of 113 episodes. It focused on five teenagers (Planeteers) who wielded enviornmentally-powered rings. When they combined their powers of Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, and Heart (never really understood that one, but so it goes), they were able to summon the superhero known as, that's right, Captain Planet.
Together, the team defended against all kinds of ecological disasters week after week. The show received honors from the Enviornmental Media Awards in 1993 and 1994, for the episodes "Dream Machine" and "Gorillas Will Be Missed," respectively. While you may not rememeber the show's various storylines, chances are good that you somewhat recall the opening sequence (seen above), which featured a voiceover from series regular LeVar Burton.
Only have time for one episode? Might we go ahead and suggest episode 17, called "Don't Drink the Water." The appropriately titled episode deals with a poisoned water supply, and features the voices of the aforementioned Goldberg and Goldblum. What happens when you combine the powers of Golds of both Berg and Blum? You're gonna want to watch (or re-watch) to find out.
