Sony's sequel to The Angry Birds Movie has begun to take flight with producer John Cohen announcing the movie's cast on Twitter. Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage will all reprise their roles of Red, Chuck, Bomb, Leonard, and Mighty Eagle respectively.
Newcomers to the feathery project include Leslie Jones (Ghostbusters), Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther), Awkwafina (Ocean's 8), Rachel Bloom (iZombie), Eugenio Derbez (Geostorm), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), Dove Cameron (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Beck Bennett (DuckTales), and Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project).
Directed by Thurop Van Orman and John Rice, The Angry Birds Movie 2 is set for a theatrical release of Sept. 20, 2019.
In the world of Marvel, That Hashtag Show reports that director Spike Lee and writer Cheo Hodari Coker's Nightwatch adaptation is reportedly looking to cast an African American actor between the ages of 25-40 for the role of Kevin Trench. They're also searching for the female lead, despite the screenplay still being in development. Trench was a man who became a costumed superhero after discovering that a future version of himself was that very hero.
Since the character was introduced in the pages of a Spider-Man comic, he is owned by Sony, which is setting up its own cinematic universe (or Spider-Verse, if you will) — set to kick off with Tom Hardy's Venom in October. It should be noted that this bit of casting news is an unconfirmed rumor at this point, and when the news on Nightwatch first broke last month, Lee was only circling the movie, not yet attached to direct.
Even more casting news from Sony has arrived on the studio's follow-up to Goosebumps, the movie based on the collected works of young adult horror writer R.L. Stine. According to Deadline, Peyton Wich (Danny Wilcox in Mr. Mercedes and bully Troy in Stranger Things) has joined the sequel, which also stars Jack Black (The House with a Clock in Its Walls) as the author and will apparently be titled Goosebumps: Slappy Halloween, a reference to the dummy who appears in several of Stine's books.
New members of the cast have been confirmed as Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Ken Jeong (Community), Chris Parnell (Rick and Morty), Madison Iseman (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Ben O’Brien (Manchester by the Sea), Caleel Harris (The Loud House), and Jeremy Ray Taylor (It). Written by Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit) and directed by Ari Sandel (The DUFF), Goosebumps 2 is scheduled for release in theaters Oct. 12.
And finally, fresh off her role as the young Beverly Marsh in It, Sophia Lillis is set to star as famous teenage sleuth Nancy Drew in a Warner Bros. adaptation of the second installment in Edward Stratemeyer's series of classic mystery novels, Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, per Deadline. The last person to portray Drew was Emma Roberts (Nerve) in the 2007 movie of the same name, but it received mixed reviews and a sequel was never greenlit. The news comes on the heels of another young star headlining an '80s-set horror title — Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown — who is also preparing to jump-start another young adult mystery franchise by playing the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes.
