The first casting breakdown has been released for the new Charmed reboot coming to The CW, giving us some fresh intel on this new group of witches aiming to fill the void.
TV Line is reporting that Jennie Urman, creator of Jane the Virgin, will helm the new Charmed, which she describes as a “fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series.” Jane the Virgin writers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin will be managing scriptwriting duties.
The series will be set in Hilltowne, Michigan and, just like in the original, involves the lives of three sisters who discover they have magical abilities and, if we're reading the breakdown correctly, actually discover they're sisters in the first place.
Macy, described as being in her late 20s with a Ph.D. in quantum physics, has moved to Hilltowne to work in the university lab. She crosses paths with Mel Pruitt, a feminist lesbian in her mid-20s who's dealing with the after-effects of a tragic accident, and Madison Pruitt, an 18-ish athletic girl who's just trying to fit in and get in a good sorority.
Discovering they're the Charmed Ones is likely to put a bit of a wrench in the works. We know what their powers are: Macy - telekinesis, Mel - time freezing, Madison - telepathy, but we don't know how they'll be introduced or manifest. Madison is described as being "horrified" by the news she's a witch, but how much the other two women know remains to be seen.
Former Charmed One Holly Marie Combs has registered her displeasure with the reboot. But there's no doubt that Charmed has long been in the hearts of many fans, and if they get this right, it will bring that power of three to a whole new audience.
Read the official breakdowns below:
MACY | A witty, intense science nerd, Macy — who is in her late 20s — is a Ph.D. in quantum physics who’s moving with her boyfriend Galvin to Hilltowne, Michigan, to work in the university lab. Macy has reason to believe that she is the sister of Mel and Madison. Her power is telekinesis.
MEL PRUITT | A strong-willed feminist, she feels deeply and is a bit controlling. Mel — who is in her mid-20s and a lesbian — is the sister of Madison. In the wake of a tragic accident, the grieving Mel becomes angry, defiantly unkempt, even violent, pushing away those who might help her, including her girlfriend, Detective Soo Jin. Mel’s power is time-freezing.
MADISON PRUITT | Mel’s younger sister (she’s 18-ish), an athletic (pilates, cheerleading) college student pledging a sorority, Madison is the opposite of her feminist sister with a desire to fit in. Madison is horrified to learn she is a witch. Her power is hearing people’s thoughts.
