Casting roundup: Avatar and Arrow tap familiar faces, Counterpart is seeing double

Today’s casting roundup features some familiar faces, and some faces that are so familiar they might just be the same one in two different roles. OK, OK, the latter only happens once (Counterpart's J.K. Simmons and crew are talented, what can we say?). But more important, new developments confirm casting for that show, as well as the Avatar sequels and The CW's Arrow.

First, the James Cameron franchise that isn’t quite a franchise yet. Dileep Rao is coming back as Dr. Max Patel to these mysterious films, innumerable as they may be, while the plot remains secret. The original the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation), so it’s no surprise that Rao is rejoining a star-studded cast that includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, and more.

While the sci-fi adventure starting filming last September, there’s not much else we know about the films.

That doesn’t apply at all to Counterpart, the Starz show (already in progress) in which Stephen Rea and Kenneth Choi will appear, confirmed Entertainment Weekly. The duplicity-based show is adding two more familiar faces (or is it four?) in its second episode. Rea plays Alexander Pope, a friend of Prime (Simmons) “who wields his power on the ‘other side’ orchestrating schemes from behind the scenes.” Choi plays Bob Dwyer, the Office of Interchange’s director of strategy, who regulates the operations of his underlings.

Finally, in less doppelgangery news, Katrina Law is reprising her role as Nyssa al Ghul in a single episode of Arrow later this year.

“In an unforgettable episode that will change Arrow forever, Katrina Law returns as the Daughter of the Demon, Nyssa al Ghul,” executive producers Wendy Mericle and Marc Guggenheim told Variety. “Nyssa comes to Star City to warn of an impending danger that will threaten everything we know and love.”

After Law’s first appearance in Season 2, al Ghul has returned on various sides of the Star City fight, last seen allied with Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett). That tenuous relationship may or may not hold when she returns in Season 6’s Episode 16, “The Thanatos Guild.”

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to arrive on Dec. 18, 2020, while the third drops on Dec. 17, 2021, Avatar 4 set for Dec. 20, 2024, and the fifth on Dec. 19, 2025. In more realistic and timely terms for you the viewer, Arrow airs on Thursdays on the CW while Counterpart does the same on Sundays on Starz.
