Comic books and Disney have seemed like the biggest job providers for actors over the past decade -- and there’s no sign of slowing down yet. The somewhat rare thing here is that the comics aren’t in the MCU, which belongs to Disney, so that there’s actually a little corporate separation. That’s because the comic today doing all the casting today is from Valiant, the third-largest comic library behind DC and Marvel.
Bloodshot, the Vin Diesel-led super-soldier comic adaptation, has added some key players today, according to Variety. With the potential for a franchise in the mix, Sony is putting some real talent behind the story of a technologically-resurrected soldier and his pursuit of other superpowered beings outside of the normal world called “harbingers.”
Baby Driver’s kickass bank-robbing breakout Eiza Gonzalez (pictured above) who’s also co-starring in Kung Fury 2, is in talks, along with Outlander’s Sam Heughan (pictured below). While the characters these two would be playing are currently unknown, Michael Sheen (The Twilight Saga, Underworld) will portray Dr. Emil Harting, the scientist responsible for the super-tech keeping Diesel’s character, Bloodshot, alive and pushing these humans into the territory of superbeings.
Shooting for Bloodshot, which has visual effects veteran Dave Wilson set to make his directorial debut with a script from Eric Heisserer (who won an Oscar for adapting Arrival), starts in July. Rumors say the film will be an R-rated tonal answer to Logan and Deadpool, and the film is amassing quite the creative team to do so.
On the other side of things, Deadline has two stories about Disney’s additions today: one for their live-action Mulan film and the other for the sequel to Maleficent. Utkarsh Ambudkar and Ron Yuan boarded Niki Caro’s legendary tale of an undercover female soldier as Skath, a con artist, and Sergeant Qiang, the “fiercely loyal” second in command of the Imperial Regiment, respectively.
For Maleficent 2 -- which finds Angelina Jolie reprising her role as the baddie from the original Sleeping Beauty -- Annihilation and Interstellar’s David Gyasi is joining Elle Fanning in the warped fairy tale. Details on his character are yet to be announced.
