For this latest roundup of casting news, we’ve got a comedian joining a series about a galactic utopia and a gaggle of actors joining a show about an earthbound dystopia.
Comedian Tig Notaro (One Mississippi) has joined the cast of Star Trek: Discovery for its second season, a spokesperson for CBS All Access has confirmed. Notaro will guest star as chief engineer Denise Reno of the U.S.S. Hiawatha. The number of episodes in which she’s set to appear is being kept under wraps.
This news of Notaro joining the cast immediately follows the announcement from CBS that Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels) has been cast as Captain Christopher Pike of the U.S.S. Enterprise in Season 2. Captain Pike was first introduced in the original 1966 Star Trek pilot “The Cage” and led the pride of the Federation fleet before Captain James T. Kirk.
Notaro gained massive attention for her stand-up performance entitled Live in 2013 when she revealed she had just been diagnosed with cancer following a break-up and losing her mother in a freak accident. Believe it or not, it is really, really funny — which is no doubt why it became a huge hit.
Although a return date has not yet been determined, production on Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery begins this month.
Meanwhile, the Resistance grows over at Colony, with several new cast members revealed for its upcoming third season.
The third season of Colony begins six months after the Bowmans’ escape from the Los Angeles bloc as Will (Josh Holloway) and Katie (Sarah Wayne Callies) struggle to rebuild their family in the world beyond the walls. When their peaceful existence is shattered, they’re sent on an odyssey that will reveal the horrifying truth behind Earth’s mysterious occupiers.
In the new season, Peyton List (Gotham) will play Amy Leonard, a doctor and member of the San Fernando cell who embarks on a journey with Eric Broussard (Tory Kittles) to deliver secrets to Resistance fighters combating the Occupation. Graham McTavish (Preacher) joins the cast as Andrew MacGregor, leader of a successful Resistance camp who may have to adjust his plans once Will and Katie arrive with information that could change the Resistance’s outlook.
In addition, Wayne Brady (Sofia The First) is set to play Everett Kynes, a tech entrepreneur who has become head of the rebuilt Seattle Colony. Kynes’ technology was misused by the human collaborators before the Arrival, leaving him with both a chip on his shoulder and a unique relationship with the invaders. Finally, Waleed Zuwaiter (Altered Carbon) will play Vincent, a man working for a Resistance group who will have to choose between supporting the Bowmans and holding onto old loyalties.
Colony also stars Peter Jacobson and Alex Neustaedter.
Created by executive producers Carlton Cuse (The Strain, Bates Motel, Lost) and Ryan Condal (Rampage), the series is co-produced by Legendary Television and Universal Cable Productions.
Colony returns to USA Network for its third season on May 2.
