Castlevania producer Adi Shankar would be OK if it all went away [Ep #56]

Oct 8, 2018, 4:00 PM EDT

A decade ago, Adi Shankar moved out to Hollywood, intent on making it in a movie business that was still a closed-off network of insiders and tastemakers. And when there were no obvious entry points for an outsider like himself, Shankar blitzed the place, breaking into the town on a whirlwind of creative energy and face makeup.

He made movie after movie, including cult hits (Dredd) and box office hits (The Grey) and did things his own way, which included breaking protocol and dropping his own unlicensed "Bootleg Universe" short films featuring his favorite superheroes and characters.

Now, even as he stays productive and churns out some of his best work, including Netflix's Castlevania and the upcoming film Bodied, he's reassessing his career, his goals, and his future. He gets candid in this one-on-one conversation, recorded in his hotel room during New York Comic Con, leaving no topic untouched.
