Buoyed by the success of Star Trek: Discovery, CBS is preparing to take its on-demand subscription service even further into the world of sci-fi — all the way, in fact, into The Twilight Zone.
According to multiple reports, CBS CEO Les Moonves dropped news of a reboot for the network’s venerable mind-bending series during an earnings call earlier today.
Details on the reboot are fresh, and they’re necessarily sparse. Moonves didn’t reveal a production calendar, he didn’t get into the reboot’s creative vision, and he didn’t discuss talent. Rather, he simply informed investors that CBS All Access, the network’s subscription on-demand service, “will be the home of a new version of one of the most iconic television shows of all time – The Twilight Zone," according to Variety.
However, a followup article from The Hollywood Reporter suggests the show “hails from Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw banner, with Marco Ramirez (Netflix Marvel dramas The Defenders and Daredevil, Sons of Anarchy) … set to pen the script and serve as showrunner.”
Moonves was more forthcoming about the role sci-fi already is playing in the brand strategy for All Access, noting the service’s demonstrated appeal to a vastly younger demographic and the expectations placed on pay-for-play content.
“The programming kind of needs to be more premium than it would be on CBS … It needs to be more specialized, needs to stand out,” he remarked, according to Deadline.
How it all will play out is still anyone’s guess. Will CBS revive the black-and-white aesthetic of the original? Will the network find a proctor who can channel Rod Serling’s knowing, behind-the-curtain smugness? Will we still be treated to introductory set pieces that hook us before we ever see that iconic swirling title card?
