Charlize Theron confirms Atomic Blonde sequel; talks motivation for Furiosa's scream

Start running yourself a nice cold bath with lots of ice, because Charlize Theron is bringing back hard-as-nails spy Lorraine Broughton for an Atomic Blonde sequel.

The actress confirmed the news at the San Francisco International Film Festival (via IndieWire) when a member of the audience asked Theron if there will be a follow-up to the movie. “Yeah, we’re working on it right now!” she replied, to huge cheers from the audience.

There had been some doubt that the film – which is based on the 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City – would be granted a sequel, given its so-so domestic box-office run of just over $50 million. However, a global take of $95 million and the fact that it was made on a relatively modest budget of $30 million ultimately made the film a decent success.

As the first film was set against the shadow of the Berlin Wall in 1989, perhaps the filmmakers will ditch the blue and neon lights for some serious ‘90s nostalgia in the next chapter. And it will be interesting to see what’s become of Lorraine now that she's blown her cover of course.

Elsewhere in the Q&A with Theron, who was there to discuss her new domestic dramedy Tully, the South African-born star spoke about Furiosa’s famous scream scene in Mad Max: Fury Road, which was also recently discussed by the film’s director, George Miller.

The scene shows Furiosa having the devastating realization that the homeland she’s been in search of all this time, the “Green Place of the Many Mothers,” is now nothing but a wasteland – prompting her to let out an earth-shaking moan in the desert.

Confirming Miller’s comments that the scene was not included in the original storyboard for the movie, Theron said: “Some directors will patiently listen to me and nothing will happen, but with George he heard what I said and he shot it. The weather in Namibia was brutal. We shot this entire scene with a skeleton crew of eight people, in a couple of takes.”

When asked where she found her rage to summon the scream, Theron alluded to the reported tension between her and co-star Tom Hardy. Both Hardy and Zoe Kravitz have spoken publicly about rumors that Hardy and Theron did not get along during the punishing shoot. “I had been shooting that movie six months already, I was very tired, and I might not have had the greatest experience with my co-star,” Theron said with a laugh.

Well, we certainly wouldn’t want to get on Theron's bad side.
