Disney and Lucasfilm delivered an animated dose of awesome at Star Wars Celebration Europe last weekend with the first look at Star Wars Rebels, set to air next year on Disney XD. Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand, Sherlock Holmes) will act as executive producer and also write the one-hour pilot episode. Dave Filoni, supervising director of Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008, was brought in as co-executive producer along with animation veteran Greg Weisman, who worked on Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.
This ambitious animation project takes place during the 20-year gap between Episode III and Episode IV and shows “a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape.”
The art has a clean, retro style intentionally reminiscent of the late Ralph McQuarrie's beautiful concept illustrations for the original Star Wars trilogy. The official logo is meant to evoke nostalgia for the familiar orange-and-black flightsuits worn by rebel fighter pilots.
Star Wars Rebels is set to launch in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, followed by a series on Disney XD. Does this art get you amped for the series?
