Check out footage from the Doom sequel that was axed to make way for Doom 4

The video game gurus at Bethesda are working on a full-on reboot of the FPS classic Doom, but we almost got a very different spin on the man vs. demon series.

The developer was on hand at the recent E3 expo, showing off footage from the new sequel — which was called Doom 4 in development but has been shortened to simply Doom — which looked decidedly awesome. Dated or not, this is one of the most famous franchises in video game history, and the new gameplay footage looked great.

The interesting bit? The version of Doom they showed off at E3 this year is different from the Doom sequel that had previously been in the works. Turns out the company pulled the plug deep in the development phase of a different version of Doom 4, which had turned into something more akin to Call of Duty than Doom. The studio didn't like the creative direction, so they scrapped the whole thing and started from scratch.

Lucky for us, some footage from that aborted-version leaked out. Have a look:

Here's how Bethesda VP of PR & Marketing Pete Hines explained what happened to Polygon:

"We weren't happy with the game that was being made. We decided that it wasn't Doom enough and needed to be thrown out and started over. Some folks left and some faces changed at the studio. Out of that change — which was not easy for those guys to go through — some amazing things happened...You can probably close your eyes and imagine a 'Call of Doom' or a 'BattleDoom' game, where it starts to feel way too much like: 'Wait, this doesn't feel like Doom, it feels like we're playing some other franchise with a Doom skin on it.'"

Both versions look extremely cool, but after seeing the leaked footage, the Call of Duty comparisons definitely shine through. But hey, why not keep both projects in development and give this one a subtitle — then we just get double the Doom?

What do you think? Are you happy with what's coming, or do you wish we could've gotten a chance to play Call of Doom?
