He’s the Joker. He’s a smoker. And although we have no idea when if or when he tokes, he sure wants to hurt everyone. Footage on the currently-in-production Joker standalone film has been released into the wild, and we have to say, Joaquin Phoenix does look cool – and threatening – as Batman’s greatest foe.

After getting a chance to see what Phoenix looks like in and out of the makeup, has revealed new footage on YouTube (along with some high-res photos) of the actor in full Joker mode walking through a subway corridor smoking a cigarette while a team of cops run by.

What’s interesting about Phoenix’s look as the Clown Prince of Crime is that the suit seems like a blend of Cesar Romero’s when he played the role in the 1960s series and Heath Ledger’s when he took on the role in 2008’s The Dark Knight. (The makeup? Very Ledger-esque.)

(Parenthetically, we do hope that one extra who collapsed is okay.)

We still don’t know much about the story of this standalone film directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips, other than that it takes place in the ‘90s and Phoenix’s version of the character isn’t an unknown (like he typically is in most interpretations, minus perhaps the 1989 Tim Burton film), but instead is a comedian/clown named Arthur who has One Bad Day that pushes him over the edge.

The film will also feature Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Deadpool 2's Zazie Beetz, and Brett Cullen will play Batman’s father Thomas Wayne as apparently kind of a jerk.

So, what do you guys think? Does this footage make you want to learn more? Do you like Phoenix’s look as the Joker? Phoenix may not care what you think of the upcoming film, but we certainly do. We’ve essentially got a year before the movie comes out, so why not let us know your thoughts in the comments below while we wait?

Joker hits theaters on Oct. 4, 2019.
