We’re just a few weeks away from the debut of Syfy’s upcoming space opera Ascension, and the network has dropped two new trailers from the event series.

The two trailers are packed with new footage, showing off a whole lot more of that hyper-stylized Mad Men-meets-Battlestar Galactica world. The network (Full disclosure: also Blastr’s corporate owner) is comparing the series to previous high-profile hits like Taken, Battlestar Galactica, Alice and Tin Man. If the series can match that level of quality and buzz, it’ll be a very good thing.

Here’s the synopsis:

In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, a mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship’s population to question the true nature of their mission.

To make sure you get the Battlestar Galactica vibe, they’ve cast former Cylon Tricia Helfer as Viondra Denniger, a beautiful, manipulative and dangerous power broker on the Ascension. The miniseries also stars Brian Van Holt (Cougar Town, The Bridge) as William Denninger, captain of the ship and Viondra’s husband. Andrea Roth (Rescue Me) plays Juliet Bryce, head doctor of the Ascension. Her relationship with her daughter, Nora (played by Jacqueline Byers) is difficult and strained.

The six-part series is set to run December 15-17, with two episodes airing each night in primetime. If the shortened run proves successful, the network could potentially pick the series up for a full season (ala Battlestar Galactica).
