The found-footage super-powered teen flick Chronicle was one of the surprise hits of the year—but without this weird, uneven concept scene it might not ever have happened.

Director Josh Trank opened up with MTV about the film's genesis, and he showed off the small proof-of-concept scene they shot to show Fox what they heck they were actually wanting to make.

Trank shows off the scene, set in a diner, cut with some commentary explaining how you make a found-footage film actually look cool—and not like, well, The Blair Witch Project.

"We took a scene from the movie, and combined it with a few other scenes, so that we could make it as dynamic of a presentation as possible," Trank said.
