We're guessing this isn't your regular buddy.
Kaslan Corp. “set out to develop the greatest and most interactive toy on the market.” But in doing so, they created “something far more special.” So says Henry Kaslan, Founder and CEO of Kaslan Corp. in an in-universe promotional video. The Kaslan chief (Tim Matheson) introduces us to Buddi, his company’s “most innovative product to-date.”
“He’s more than a toy,” Kaslan promises. “He’s your best friend.”
But as calm and soothing as Kaslan’s voice is, and as sincere as his enthusiasm seems, his words deliver disturbing menace. Check it out below:
Alas, this clip does not in fact introduce us to Buddi. For that, we’re going to have to wait for the official trailer, which debuts this Friday, Feb. 8.
Child’s Play, a remake of the 1988 horror film about a doll named Chucky (and relax; the Buddi doll will eventually answer to the name Chucky) that turns sentient and evil, stars Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry, and Gabriel Bateman.
Meanwhile, SYFY has ordered a Chucky TV show completely unrelated to the remake, from the character's original creator, Don Mancini, (who’s not the biggest fan of the folks at MGM and Orion remaking the film, especially without his involvement). The TV series follows the continuity of the ongoing franchise that Mancini has been overseeing. (MGM holds the rights to the original film, but Mancini maintains the rights to the rest of the franchise.)
Child’s Play wants to be your friend starting June 21.
