Chilling Adventures of Sabrina showrunner teases Christmas special and 'sexier' second season

Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) may have signed the Book of the Beast at the end of Season 1 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but her magical exploits are just getting started. This Friday, Dec. 14, Netflix will release the show's holiday special, A Midwinter's Tale.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, series showrunner, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, teased the festive tribute by stating that, like Sabrina herself, it is of two worlds. What that means is the special will be related to Season 1, but still be its own standalone entity.

"When we decided that we were going to try to do a special episode to drop around Christmas, we wanted it to be a standalone insofar that everything you need to enjoy the episode is in the episode," he said. "But there are elements that we serialized through the first part of the season that we did have to carry through and help us set up the second part of the season."

A few things you can look for in A Midwinter's Tale that connect to the events of the first season are: Sabrina's breakup with Harvey (Ross Lynch), Sabrina's relationship to her mortal chums, and the storyline of her mother (Annette Reilly) being trapped in limbo. Of course, these will only be teased in the holiday special, further explored in Season 2, which Aguirre-Sacasa also spoke about.

"It’s a little more fun," he added. "It’s a little sexier. Now that we know everyone and we’ve really established the world, we can play in it a little more rather than build it. It feels a little more ambitious and rollicking than part one."

He also promised some more Riverdale Easter eggs "here and there." Oh yeah, there's also the possibility that Salem, Sabrina's black cat, may speak one day.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 2 premieres on Netflix April 5.
