Be honest. Did you see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow back in 2004? I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess most of you said no.
For those of you who have seen this CGI love child of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, and Edgar Rice Burroughs, I'm gonna head further out onto that limb and guess at least 47% of the reason you even considered it was because of Angelina Jolie and her eyepatch. Mostly the eyepatch.
And yes, even though she is only in the movie for approximately 10 minutes, she is hands down the second best part of the entire movie. She plays Franky Cook, member of the Royal Air Force and commander of this crazy flying aircraft carrier where she says things like "Alert the amphibious squadron." SHE HAS A JETPACK.
But it's the eyepatch that really steals the show. Mostly because it's an eyepatch, which just makes everyone look more badass. (This only actually works in the movies. In reality, eyepatches are way less cool.) But in this case, it's because you KNOW there's a story there. How did she lose the eye, movie?! Was it in a battle with a heretofore-unknown sea creature that shoots spines and poison? Was she shot during an altercation with some Germans? Bar fight? Was she born with it? Just walked out of the womb fully formed and eyepatch-clad?
Do I actually wish this movie was about Commander Franky Cook and her amphibious squadron? Maybe …
