There is a figure that looms large and terrifying for any kid who grew up in the mid-'90s. It haunts our dreams, sneaking through the shadows. We see it in the corner of our eye. Silently it waits, biding its time for the perfect moment to strike, and we know it will just at the wrong moment.
It is the Temple Guard from Legends of the Hidden Temple, and it is probably going to grab you right when you're trying to assemble that damn silver monkey.
If you didn't grow up in the '90s, then you may not understand the terror these things inflicted upon their victims, or even who their victims were. The Temple Guard were a group of men who hid throughout the final challenge of the children's game show. That last challenge was a giant labyrinth of puzzles that contestants had to run through in a certain amount of time, and if you were inside, you can bet the Temple Guard were coming for you at least once.
They hid behind doors, in compartments, around corners, and, worst of all, inside these weird contraptions you had to put your entire body into in order to open a door. The amount of anxiety that damn temple caused my young and impressionable mind could not be overstated, and as much as I wanted so badly to be a Purple Parrot, don the golden helmet and knee pads, and kick ass at the trivia stairs … I was never certain I could face down the Temple Guard.
To this day, they probably make a list of my top handful of fears. I have half a mind to carry around one of those giant plastic medallions they seem to accept as payment like it's mace.
