Thor and Loki aren’t the only brothers in the universe to experience some healthy sibling rivalry – and it’s no secret that both Chris Hemsworth and his brother Liam Hemsworth were once going head-to-head to play the hammer hero in the 2011 movie outing for Marvel. However, now Chris has given a little background into their audition process, revealing that at one stage in the game, it was actually Liam who was the hot favorite to inherit the throne of Asgard.

Chris – who reveals the breakdown for the part stipulated he had to be at least 6'3" and over 200 pounds – explains in the latest issue of W Magazine how Liam was first to get a call back after he “blew” the audition himself. “Months went by and then my brother, my little brother, Liam, was in Australia and sent a tape across and he got a call back, then another call back and then was down to the last kind of four or five people for it,” he remembers.

But after getting a second shot at it, Chris explains how his own mother eventually got him back in the running. “So I did an audition in Vancouver in this hotel room with my mum reading Anthony Hopkins' part,” he adds. “She must have nailed it because it got me back in the room and that second audition was a lot different than my first one. I came in kind of with a little, I guess, motivation and maybe frustration that my little brother had gotten further than me. It's a little family, sibling rivalry sort of kicked up in me. Then it moved pretty quick from there. It was cool.”

Chris was a relative newcomer in Hollywood before hitting the hammer out of the park in the movie. His most notable role up until then had been in the opening sequence of Star Trek (2009) playing James T. Kirk’s father George Kirk.

The much-anticipated third installment of the franchise - Thor: Ragnarok - will hit theatres later this year. While fans patiently wait less than two months for the flick to arrive, a behind the scenes video recently revealed a possible major plot point (and no, it’s not that Tom Hiddleston has actually been replaced by Liam Hemsworth as Loki but oh-my-thunder-god-can-you-imagine).
