The next Star Trek film could be much different than we initially anticipated. Why? The future of Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth's involvement in the project is apparently in jeopardy. Yes, Kirk's future is unknown.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the talks between the Chrises' representation and Paramount have stalled, with both sides walking away from negotiations.
Obviously, if the two sides are unable to resolve the conflicts, the future of the Star Trek film franchise would look massively different. Star Trek 4 is said to revolve around Captain Kirk (Pine) on a time-traveling adventure with his father (Hemsworth), who first appeared in the role in 2009 -- meaning both characters are pretty central to the film.
The breakdown in the negotiations reportedly comes down to money, with Hemsworth and Pine asking the studio to honor deals previously made in 2016, while Paramount looks to keep the film's budget under control through pay cuts.
The third film in the franchise, Star Trek Beyond, disappointed at the box office, which might contribute to some of the studio's budget measures. Hopefully, the two sides will come to an agreement soon. Re-casting is certainly an option but likely isn't one either side wants.
Deals with the rest of the main cast, like Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), and Zoe Saldana (Uhura), are still to be made, so could there be more rough roads ahead?
