Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence, explosions, love and spaceships in first trailer for Passengers

Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are star-crossed lovers (literally) in the first, action-packed trailer for the deep-space romance Passengers.

The first footage is stunning, and it’s obvious Sony Pictures spared no expense to bring director Morten Tyldum's (Headhunters) future-set tale to life. The film looks to be one heck of an ambitious genre meld, combining comedy, sci-fi, action and psychological drama — all wrapped in a love story starring two of the prettiest people on (or off) the planet. And man, it just works.

The trailer does an excellent job of setting up the characters and stakes as we meet Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt as two passengers (get it?) onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. But then the two wake up 90 years too early in the journey — and if that wasn’t a big enough problem — there’s also something catastrophically wrong with the ship. Throw in some mystery, action beats and the charm of Lawrence and Pratt (seriously, the two literally smolder when they share the screen) and we look to have a winner.

Or if nothing else, at least a movie that should be extremely pretty to look at.

Passengers opens Dec. 21.
