Let it never be said that Christian Bale doesn't help out his fellow Batmen.
It's been a little more than a year since Bale publicly hung up his Batcowl after completing the Dark Knight trilogy with director Christopher Nolan, and he still casts a long shadow over the franchise. He's the only man so far to have played Batman in more than two live-action feature films, he's by far the most successful Batman from a box-office standpoint, and for many fans he's become a favorite incarnation of the Caped Crusader. Now another actor, Ben Affleck, will have to attempt to fight his way out of Bale's shadow and do Batman his way. Though many fans are still angry about the Affleck casting, Bale, who often said while promoting The Dark Knight Rises that he'd finished his run on the character and was happy to pass it on, has nothing but goodwill for his successor.
"I wish him all the best. He's a very experienced actor and filmmaker and, you know, he'll make it his own," Bale said while promoting his new film Out of the Furnace. "Our thing's finished and we always declared it was finished and, you know, it should be passed on to another actor, and will be again after him."
When asked if Affleck had reached out to him for advice, Bale said he offered only one tip that is both extremely practical and a little bit gross.
"The only thing I said to him is, look, just make sure he can take a piss without anyone having to help him because it's a little bit humiliating, as I went through, when you have to somebody, you know, kind of ... help you out of the costume in order to be able to do that," Bale said. "So that was my main piece of advice for him."
So, with that statement, Bale gave us both his advice to Ben Affleck and an inadvertent peek into the more explicit side of making the Dark Knight trilogy. Hey, no one ever said playing Batman would be easy.
